Backstory mostly headcanon
Marian Hawke was the oldest of three children, born three years before Bethany and Carver, who were twins. She was the daughter of Malcolm and Leandra Hawke, two former Kirkwall residents. Malcolm was an apostate, a mage on the run from the Circle of Magi and Templars in Kirkwall. Both of his daughters inherited his gift for magic, while his son did not, instead joining the king's army.
Hawke was taught about the world and about magic by her father, and she always strove to be like him. He passed on many lessons to her about being cautious in the Fade, the temptations demons would offer her, and the world at large.
"Even in your defiance of the Templars and all who would oppose you," he taught her, "be respectful. Those with power have it for a reason and should not be dismissed lightly." Another lesson he conferred upon her was, "Even if a Templar believes all mages are evil, you must not think the same of all of them. If you do, you are no better than they and have no more right to think so than them." One belief he instilled firmly in her was that "everyone should be free to walk the path they chose for themselves, so long as they are not harming innocents."
Prologue
The Destruction of Lothering
The Hawke family -- Marian, her younger siblings Bethany and Carver, and their mother Leandra -- was forced from their Lothering home by the Blight sweeping north through Ferelden. As the Darkspawn overwhelmed the town, the family fled. On their way, they met Ser Wesley Vallen and his wife, Aveline. Ser Wesley as a Templar, and Aveline was a soldier of King Cailan, whom Carver had also served, though she was an officer. The decision about the two fell to Hawke, who welcomed them amongst her family and urged them all further north. The path was blocked, however, by an ogre. Bethany attempted to fight the beast but was killed. Together, Hawke, Aveline, and Carver managed to fell the creature but were overwhelmed by Darkspawn.
Before the Darkspawn could destroy them, however, a dragon appeared and killed the swarm around the party. The dragon then transformed into an old woman calling herself Flemeth. She promised to take Hawke and her party ahead of the horde so they could reach a ship and sail to Kirkwall, where some family on Leandra's side remained, if Hawke would deliver an amulet from her to a clan of Dalish elves camped not far from Kirkwall. Hawke readily agreed. Before Flemeth would take them, however, she demanded Wesley, fast succumbing to the Darkspawn Taint that could only prove fatal, be dealt with. Hawke spoke to Aveline, leaving the choice to her, and Aveline brought herself to kill her husband.
Once in Kirkwall, however, Hawke learned that most Ferelden refugees were being sent away. Her uncle Gamlen, who Leandra had said was a nobleman, was, instead, living in poverty and unable to make all the necessary bribes to bring the family and Aveline -- who Leandra and Hawke insisted would be among them -- into the city. To pay their way, Hawke and Carver would have to work for either a guild of mercenaries or a guild of smugglers for a year. Having no choice, Hawke agreed and went into service with Athenril, the smuggler.
Act I
Hawke and Carver spoke to Bartrand Tethras, a dwarf planning an expedition into the Deep Roads. He refused to hire them on, and the pair were forced to withdraw, defeated. They were approached after, however, by Bartrand's younger brother, Varric, with a proposition. The expedition wasn't in need of another hired guard; it needed a partner, someone who could invest 50 sovereigns. If Hawke brought that money to Bartrand, there would be nothing to do but let her join.
Way It Should Be
After a year in the city and free of her contract to the smugglers but still in need of money, Hawke went to Aveline for legitimate work. The guards often had bounties, and she wanted to fulfill some of them. Aveline came through: there was information about a possible ambush waiting on a Sundermount patrol route. Hawke and Aveline traveled together to assess it, killed the would-be attackers, and returned to the barracks.
There, Aveline was berated by the captain of the guard for taking a patrol that wasn't hers. Brennan, the guard who was meant to take the patrol, thanked Aveline, however, and remarked that the satchel she'd been given for the routine walk had been heavier and that, now, it had been passed to another guardsman, Donnic. Concerned, Aveline suggested following Donnic to make sure all was well.
That night, in Lowtown, Donnic was set upon by Coterie -- the thieves' guild -- agents, and Hawke helped Aveline to protect Donnic. After the Coterie agents were dead, the satchel was searched. It contained information from the guard captain to aid the guild. Once back at the barracks, Aveline reported the transgressions and Jeven, the captain of the guard, was arrested. Aveline was promised the position once she was formally trained for it.
Long Way Home
As she had promised Flemeth she would, Hawke travelled up Sundermount once she was free to do so. There, she found the clan of Dalish elves she'd been told to seek out, and she spoke to their Keeper, Marethari. Marethari sent her on, further up the mountain, to seek out her First -- her apprentice -- Merrill to perform the ritual. She also indicated that, once it was done, it was her wish that Merrill travel with Hawke, rather than remain with them.
Merrill proved to be a mage when undead creatures attacked them on their way up the mountain, and another Dalish they met treated her with some hostility. Hawke did what she could to try and offer support while not prying, and the party continued through caves and up the mountain. When a magical barrier blocked the way, Merrill removed it with blood magic.
When Hawke attempted to approach the altar for the ritual, a new wave of undead appeared. Once they were defeated, Merrill performed the ritual, and Flemeth herself emerged from the amulet. Again, she spoke in riddles to Hawke before transforming herself into a dragon and leaving the party. Hawke reported to Marethari and agreed that Merrill could travel with her. Upon their arrival back in Kirkwall, Merrill took a house in the Elven Alienage in Lowtown.
Tranquility
Seeking maps of entrances to the Deep Roads, Hawke inquires after a Gray Warden acting as a healer. Her search begins in Lirene's Fereldan Imports, where she's intially dismissed but finally learns of Anders in Darktown, the Undercity. Upon departing, there was a group of Fereldens waiting, not keen on a Kirkwall citizen seeking out their healer. Hawke, however, vouched for herself as a Ferelden and convinced them to leave her be.
In Darktown, Hawke met Anders's inital hostility with calm. When he suggested exchanging a favor for a favor, she agreed. He told her about Karl, a friend of his being held prisoner in the Gallows. Hawke promised her aid to another mage and went with Anders to the Chantry at night.
For all their care in sneaking in after Karl was seen going in, the party still walked into a trap. Karl had been made Tranquil and betrayed Anders to the Templars. Anders, enraged, was overtaken by a spirit inside him and joined Hawke in the battle against the Templars. Once the fight was done, Anders became himself again. Karl, momentarily revived from his state of Tranquility by the spirit, begged for Anders to kill him before the change disappeared again. Hawke, ever in fear of being made Tranquil if caught by the Templars, urged Anders to comply. With Karl dead, the party quickly left the Chantry.
After, Hawke approached Anders, who explained that he had become one with a spirit of Justice, caught outside the Fade, but he feared he had transformed Justice into something darker with his anger. Hawke accepted his word, though with some caution, that Justice was not a demon and he, therefore, was not an abomination.
Bait and Switch
Athenril, still fond of Hawke for all her service, put Hawke in touch with Anso, a dwarf merchant whose goods, he claims, were stolen. He asked Hawke to find and return them, and she agreed. Finding the house where the goods were stored proved easy, and there were only a few guards inside. The chest, however, was empty, and Hawke left, confused and disappointed she'd have to report a failure.
Once outside the house, though, Hawke was attacked by Tevinter forces. She fought them all, even more confused, and came across their captain as she tried to leave. When he called for reinforcements, Fenris appeared and killed him. Fenris then explained to Hawke that the chest was meant as a trap for him, and he knew he could not handle it alone. Therefore, he asked Anso to find him help. He was a former Tevinter slave, and his old master, a magister named Danarius, was still in Kirkwall. He asked for Hawke's help to face him, and Hawke agreed.
The party met Fenris outside a Hightown mansion he claimed had Danarius inside, and Hawke assisted in cutting through the shades and rage demons summoned by the mage to protect himself. Though Danarius proves not to be inside, Fenris takes over the mansion, daring the man to try and reclaim it. He also begrudgingly agrees to work with Hawke, despite her being a mage, appreciative but cautious of her reply of "survival" when asked what she seeks from the world.
Birthright
Gamlen, discontent, tried to convince Leandra to pay for food or rent, cowed to some degree when she reminded him that her children had worked for criminals for a year because Gamlen had forced them to. She inquired about their parents' estate, and Gamlen revealed he sold it, along with the will in the vault, still. Carver confessed to Hawke that Leandra, hoping to start something, gave him an old key into the cellars and that he learned the estate was now in the hands of slavers, lost because of Gamlen's debts.
Hawke, always eager to take on slavers, urged her brother to come with her, and the two broke into the estate from the cellar and worked their way through those who had claimed the house, fighting until they reached the vault. In searching everything, they found letters from a once-friend of their father's and the will -- which left everything to Leandra and her children, not Gamlen. With this information, Leandra became convinced to petition the viscount for the return of the estate.
Family History
Interested in the papers she found, Hawke chased down the man responsible for them, Tobrius. Trobrius proved to be a mage in the circle, and he gave Hawke letters written between her father and a Templar, Ser Maurevar Carver. Hawke took this information to her younger brother, who had always felt out of place, as the lone sword among a family of mages.
The Unbidden Rescue
Alerted by a poster promising a reward, Hawke learned of the viscount's son going missing. She spoke to the seneschal after hearing the head of a mercenary group speaking about bringing Saemus, the missing boy, back.
Hawke tracked the mercenaries to the Wounded Coast and found them with Saemus. A dead Qunari seemed to suggest the danger was past, but Saemus was distraught and insisted he had been with the Qunari as a friend. When the mercenaries seemed ready to harm Saemus, Hawke intervened, killing several waves of them. She asked Saemus, who had been learning about the Qun from the dead Qunari, what should be done with the body, and he assured her it could be left alone.
Together, they returned to the viscount, where Saemus and his father argued and Hawke tried as best she could to evade answering, only barely aware of the Qunari culture and way of life.
Enemies Among Us
Outside the Chantry, Hawke met a young woman named Macha, asking after her missing brother, Keran. She begged Hawke to help her, and Hawke agreed. Hawke carefully questioned some recruits outsie the Gallows and learned that several recruits were going missing. One, Wilmond, returned and left the cit to clear his head, followed by Knight-Captain Cullen.
Hawke followed Wilmond's trail and found his camp, only to come upon Cullen intimidating the recruit. When Cullen struck Wilmond and drew his sword, Wilmond rose, furious, and transformed into a shade, summoning other demons to help him. Once the creatures were defeated, Cullen confided in Hawke. Wilmod and Keran were last seen at the Blooming Rose, though Cullen had no luck questioning the workers of the establishment.
Hawke followed the lead and went to the Blooming Rose, where she was referred to Idunna, who had seen both Wilmond and Keran. Hawke tried to question Idunna but was put off. When pressed, the woman demanded to know who told Hawke about her, and Hawke found herself giving up the information. Idunna attempted to force Hawke to slit her own throat, but she broke the spell through will and learned that Idunna was a blood mage. For that and the attempted death, Hawke kills Idunna. Her papers revealed she was supplying Templars to a sanctuary in Darktown to have demons put in them that would be unleashed later.
Hawke found the sanctuary and faced off with Tarohne, the blood mage responsible for the operation. She killed her and freed Keran, who was being held prisoner. Anders confirmed that Keran was not possessed, and Hawke sent the recruit away to find his sister.
Later, in the Gallows, Hawke met with Cullen and revealed the plot to him. When Keran approached, Cullen wanted to send him away, deny him the ability to be a templar, but Hawke intervened, assuring Cullen there was no demon in Keran, and the young man was allowed to remain a recruit, eligble for full knighthood in ten years if no signs of possession occurred.
Blackpowder Promise
Hawke met a merchant on the road named Javaris. He explained to Hawke that he was looking to deal with the Arishok in exchange for explosive powder and needs to defeat the Tal-Vashoth, rogue Qunari. Hawke agreed to help him for a fee and travelled to the Wounded Coast.
Once there, Hawke came across an outcast of the group who warned her about the ambush ahead, and she went on to face them. After clearing the way and the caverns nearby, Hawke returned to Kirkwall to meet Javaris and the Arishok.
The Arishok explained, then, that no deal with struck with Javaris. He made the task up when he was refused and further proved his inabilities by hiring someone rather than doing it himself. The Arishok sent Hawke away but showed some signs of respecting her, her abilities, and her dealings with Javaris and him.
Wayward Son
After visiting Merrill in the Alienage to see how she was getting along, Hawke overheard a woman speaking to a Templar about her missing mage son, Feynriel. Once the Templar left, Hawke intervened and promised to find the boy and help him. Hawke began in Lowtown, where Vincento, an Antivan human merchant and the boy's father. After proving she was a mage, Hawke learned that Vincento had sent him to a former templar named Samson.
Samson turned Feynriel away when he couldn't pay but sent him to the docks, which was where Hawke went next. She came upon sailors trying to subdue a mage girl, who turned herself into an abomination rather than be harmed by them. After defeating the sailors and the abomination, Hawke finds a letter on the girl's body. The captain of the sailors kept a bill of sale, showing Feynriel had been taken to Darktown to be sold as a slave. Hawke tracked down the slaver, Danzig, and learned that Feynriel had been take to the Wounded Coast.
Hawke followed the trail down the Wounded Coast, into the Slave Caverns. There, she killed the man holding Feynriel hostage and, after listening to him, sent him to the Dalish to learn to control his magic rather than go to the Circle. Hawke then returned to the Alienage to inform his mother about Feynriel's choice and new location.
An Errant Letter
The letter Hawke discovered upon the mage girl when seeking Feynriel proved to be for Ser Thrask, the girl's father. Hawke returned the letter to him and swore to keep his secret.
The Bone Pit
A Hightown merchant, Hubert, approaches Hawke abou ridding his mine, the Bone Pit, of trouble, as many of his workers have gone missing. Hawke complied, fighting several dragons. When she returned to Hubert, he offered her a 50% share in the mine if she would continue to keep it safe. Hawke agreed and, with a Ferelden having half the mine, the workers were easily persuaded to return to their tasks.
Magistrate's Orders
A magistrate of Kirkwall approached Hawke, asking her to hunt down a man he had sentenced to life in prison and bring him back alive. Hawke agreed and went to the ruins where the criminal was holed up.
An elf, Elren, greeted her and informed her that the man she was sent after was a killer. He attacked several elven children and had taken Elren's daughter, Lia. Despite the orders she was supposed to be under, Hawke swore to kill the man.
Hawke found Lia in the caverns, and she begged for the life of the man, saying he had let her go and told her to run. Hawke sent her away without making promises and ventured further in. When found, Kelder claimed demons made him kill the elven children and the Circle told him there were no demons. He begged not to be allowed to hurt more, and Hawke complied, killing him.
Act of Mercy
After receiving a strange letter, Hawke ventured to the Wounded Coast and met Ser Thrask. He explained that some apostates had fled their Templar escorts and were hiding in the caves. The Templars, he explained, would kill them all unless a peaceful solution could be reached first. Hawke agreed to help and went in.
Within the caverns, Hawke met one mage who claimed the others were using blood magic and had fled. Hawke sent him toward the opening of the cave, assuring him that Ser Thrask would keep him safe. She pressed onward and faced Decimus, the leader of the mages, and several of his fellows. Once they were dead, Grace, another of the mages, approached Hawke for help killing Thrash so they can flee. Hawke refused, having too much respect for Thrask, but promised to help them escape through non-violent means.
Hawke and Varric together handle the templars, convincing them that the mages are all dead but a few escaped through the back passages of the caverns, leading the Templars to pursue in that area. The mages then left through the entrance and fled.
The First Sacrifice
Still looking to earn the coin to fund her partnership in the expedition, Hawke responded to another poster seeking help. A man named Ghyslain wanted his wife, Ninette, found. Hawke agreed to help and was directed to speak to Jethann, a worker of the Blooming Rose. Jethann sent Hawke to Emeric, a Templar who had also been asking about Ninette.
Emeric, after being attacked and saved by Hawke, handed over his notes, remarking that he was too old to be useful continuing the investigation. Hawke followed the reports, finding a foundry in Lowtone where she was attacked by demons. Eventually, she came upon a bag of bones, which contained a severed hand and Ninette's ring. Hawke returned the ring to Ninette's husband.
Fools Rush In
Hawke witnessed a few thugs engaging a woman in the Hanged Man. The woman introduced herself as Captain Isabella and asked for Hawke's backup during a duel. Hawke agreed and went with Isabella to Hightown. Several groups of soldiers attacked them, and Isabella led the way to the Chantry, where the man she was supposed to meet was hiding. Once he was dead, Isabella confided in Hawke she was looking for a relic that, otherwise, the man's employer would kill her for losing.
Shepherding Wolves
While out in Lowtown at night, Hawke came upon a sister of the Chantry soliciting help. After Hawke intervened to stop a mugging, the sister, Sister Petrice, offered Hawke the job.
Hawke met Petrice at the agreed safehouse and learned that Petrice wanted her to smuggle out a Qunari mage. Hawke agreed, feeling a kinship with the Qunari as a mage. She led the Qunari, called Ketojan by Petrice, out through passages under the city, forced at one point to fight a group of muggers.
Once outside the city, Hawke meets a band of Qunari, who demand the return of Ketojan, whom they call "Saarebas," the name, rank, and title of all Qunari mages. They also informed Hawke that there was a trail of Qunari bodies leading right to her. Hawke denies involvement with such a thing and is told to hand over Saarebas to them. The Qunari she had led indicated he wished to return, even though it meant his death, so Hawke agreed. After Saarebas was dead, the other Qunari attacked Hawke, forcing her to kill them all.
Once the battle was done, Hawke returned to the safehouse and demanded answers of Petrice. She was evasive but made it clear she intended to use Hawke's death and that of Ketojan to cause support for the Chantry against the Qunari.
Night Lies, Sharp Little Pinpricks, Pier Pressure
Hawke and her companions, often out after dark, came across several gangs in the streets of Lowtown, the docks, and Hightown. One by one, those foolish enough to try and harm her met their ends at the hand of Hawke's magic and her companions' various skills. Without really meaning to, Hawke accepted the task of clearing the streets of Kirkwall from those who would cause trouble after dark.
Deep Roads Expedition
With the money collected, her business in Kirkwall settled, and Anders's maps, Hawke approached Bartrand about Varric's offer to make her a partner in the expedition. After proving herself by showing him the money and the maps, Bartrand agreed, allowing Hawke to take two people with her into the Deep Roads. Despite her mother's objections, Hawke agreed with her brother and brought him along. Wary of the power of the Darkspawn and remembering comments Anders had made about hating the Deep Roads, she chose Fenris to accompany her as well.
Trouble beset the group almost immediately, as their merchant's son, Sandal, went missing around the same time that their primary route was found to be blocked by a collapse. Hawke agreed to see to both problems at once.
After battling her way through Darkspawn, Hawke found Sandal, who needed no recusing, and sent him back to his father and eventually found a way around the blockage. Their journey led them further in, to a thaig Bartrand found remarkable for its difference in lettering and its lack of anything related to dwarven traditions. Hawke explored further, coming upon an idol made of pure lyrium. Bartrand took the idol before sealing Hawke, Carver, Fenris, and Varric in the thaig.
Having no other way to go, the group went further in, battling strange rock creatures and eventually coming upon a hunger demon. The group battled it, refusing to comply with its request to be left alone. Further on, Hawke and the group are forced to battle an ancient rock wraith, something Varric always believed to be just a story. With it dead, its treasure proves valuable and to hold a key up to the higher levels of the Deep Roads.
Having reached the original campsight, the end seemed to be near for the party, but Carver revealed a now week-old injury. Darkspawn blood had corrupted his, the same as Wesley. Hawke now found herself in Aveline's position, forced to kill him rather than make him suffer the slow death waiting for him.
Act II
With the money from the Deep Roads expedition, Hawke bought back the Amell estate and established herself and her mother as important people in the city. Important enough, now, that the Templars turned a blind eye to the apostate, so long as she at least pretended to have discretion about her use of magic. She spent three years building a new life for herself, seeing to those in the city she cared about and trying to move on from the loss of both her siblings. Eventually, she was summoned by the viscount with a very interesting purpose: the Arishok had requested her presence at his compound, by name.
Finding Home
While Hawke enjoyed her new home, which she'd finally started to get used to, Aveline came to see her and told her that Emeric, whom she'd spoken to years ago, was stirring up trouble again about the murders. She asked Hawke to look into it, and Hawke agreed.
Blackpowder Courtesy
Aware of the importance of the Qunari presence as well as an official request from the viscount, Hawke went to the Arishok, as he had requested. He warned her that someone, likely, Javaris, stole what they believed to be gaatlok -- the explosive powder -- but was, instead, poison gas. The Arishok explained that he intended the decoy but felt Hawke ought to know so she could attempt to stop things before people began to die from the poison.
Jarvais had attempted to flee the city, but Hawke learned of his location through the Coterie and found him, only to learn that he had been framed. He told her where to find the elf who had stolen the recipe for the powder, and Hawke left Javaris to find her.
Hawke found the handiwork of the gas already in use in Lowtown and fought through mercenaries to force the barrels releasing the gas closed. The elf Javaris mentioned, looking to stir agitation against the Qunari, revealed herself, and Hawke killed her. Hawke returned to the Arishok and informed him of the goings on. In conversation, the Arishok revealed that he could not leave Kirkwall until he recovered something stolen from him.
Hawke returned to the viscount to update him.
Family Matter
Varric told Hawke of rumors that Bartrand had returned to Kirkwall, and the two went to the house for more information. Several groups of men, all out of their minds, attacked them, but they proceeded to find Hugin, Bartrand's steward. He tells Varric and Hawke that after the acquisition of the idol, Bartrand began to hear voices, such as the idol singing to him. He sold the statue but still heard it, eventually going mad.
Varric and Hawke faced Bartard, only to find him out of his mind. With no way to gain answers from him, the two agreed that the only merciful solution was to put Bartrand out of his misery and kill him.
Dissent
Anders approached Hawke about disturbing news he had received. A knight called Ser Alrik was plotting something called the "Tranquil Solution," a plan to make every made in Thedas Tranquil. Hawke agreed readily to help him and followed him to a tunnel that led to a lyrium smuggler's route.
The group battled their way through the path to find a mage named Ella sneaking out of the Circle. Alrik was there as well and revealed his intentions to make her Tranquil. Anders gave way to Justice, attacking the Templars. Hawke joined the battle. After the battle, Justice could not be sated, nearly killing Ella until Hawke intervened. Anders, horrified by himself, flees.
Hawke took Alrik's papers, reading them to discover everyone he had approached about his Tranquil Solution rejected it, and she used this information to comfort Anders while convinving him not to leave Kirkwall.
The Long Road
Aveline requested Hawke's help with a personal matter. This wound up being a ver botched courtship, including meaningful but unexplained gifts, an invitation to the Hanged Man, and Hawke taking a patrol to allow Aveline to speak to the obect of her affection, Guardsman Donnic. Eventually, however, Aveline proved so hopeless that Hawke interferred directly, leading to Donnic speaking to Aveline alone to return her attentions.
Inside Job
Trouble at the Bone Pit saw Hawke called in by Hubert. A man had been leaking information to ambushes in return for payment, and Hawke gained the information from him before sending him to jail. It involved some violence amongst the Coterie, but the matter was settled and the investment protected.
A Bitter Pill
As a favor to Merrill, Hawke went to the see the Dalish on Sundermount. Before she could arrive, however, slavers ambushed her, looking to reclaim Fenris for Danarius. Hawke stood with him, fighting until they were all dead. Hawke agreed to go with Fenris to find who sent them.
After battling their way through part of the slaver's den, the group came upon an elven slave girl. She told them that her master had killed her father and she has nowhere to go. Hawke spoke kindly to her, sending her to the Hawke estate in Kirkwall and assuring Fenris that the girl would be a paid servant, not a slave.
Hadriana was waiting for them, and a battle ensued. Trying to bargain for her life, Hadriana informed Fenris he had a sister and where to find her. Fenris, despite having promised not to kill her if she told him more, ended her life. Hawke agreed with him, unsympathetic toward the death of a slaver.
Mirror Image
Hawke continued up the mountain after dealing with the slavers, coming to the Dalish. The Keeper disapproved of Merrill's plans to fix the mirror, so Merril invoked the right of the Dalish to perform a service to gain possession of a tribal tool. The Keeper set them to the task of defeating a varterral, a giant beast threatening the Dalish.
The group came upon Pol, a member of the clan, who fled from Merrill, right into the path of varterral, which leads him to being killed. Merrill questioned the Keeper upon their arrival, and Marethari admitted to warning the clan to beware of Merrill. She then gave Hawke the tool Merrill requires, advising her to look after Merrill. After hearing about the blood magic used to "cleanse" the mirror, Hawke sided with the Keeper and withheld the tool from Merrill, resulting in a great dislike from Merrill.
Night Terrors
Arianni, the mother of Feynriel, called upon Hawke for assistance again. Feynriel slipped into a deep sleep and could not be woken. With the help of Marethari, Hawke was expected to enter the Fade and help Feynriel. Hawke agreed, and Marethari came to the Alienage. Alone, Marethari told Hawke that Feynriel had the power to shape the Fade and had to either be saved from the demons or killed in the Fade, which would make him Tranquil. Hawke swore not to let him become a threat.
In the Fade, Hawke refused the deal offered to her by the demon that wished to possess Feynriel, and she proceeded to the rooms where Feynriel was being directly tempted. In the first, she assumed the form of Feynriel's mother, talking him out of the illusion of being with his father. She faced the desire demon responsible, forced also to fight Isabella, promised a ship and crew by the demon. In the next room, Hawke took on the appearance of First Enchanter Orsino, convincing Feynriel that the Dalish would never put a human in charge. The pride demon responsible tempted Varric into a fight, and Hawke battled both.
Once free, Feynriel thanked Hawke, and she agreed with his decision to go to Tevinter to learn to control his powers. When she woke, she told his mother, who chose to go back with the Dalish, then went to her companions to speak with them about what happened in the Fade, assuring both she wasn't angry and understood the temptation well.
Offered and Lost
Upon being told about the Arishok's refusal to leave, the viscount informed Hawke that a party of Qunari delegates who had met with him have gone missing. Hawke agreed to help and went in search of the person responsible, finding him in the Hanged Man. She learned from him that he was under orders to hand over the party by a Templar bearing the seal of the grand cleric.
With this information, Hawke went to the Chantry. There, she met Petrice again, now a Mother in the church. Petrice informed Hawke that Varnell, her former bodyguard, has abused his authority and taken the Qunari. Hawke went to find Varnell and came upon him and several fanatics siding with him ready to kill the Qunari delegates. After killing them, Hawke reported the viscount, who wanted to hide the bodies, but Hawke argued.
Prime Suspect
When Hawke spoke to Emeric, he gave her a name of a noble in Hightown, Gascard DuPuis, whom he suspected of being the killer. Hawke went to investigate and found one of the missing women there named Alessa. He made the claim that he was hunting the murderer and took Alessa's blood to use blood magic to find her in case the killer got to her first.
Hawke, suspicious, refused to believe him and battled his demons and him, eventually killing him and letting Alessa run away.
Hometown Freed, Ladies' Lights Out, The Lowdown
Where old gangs had been swept out, new ones emerged. As she had years ago, Hawke took to the streets in her travels, this time deliberately clearing out thos who thought they could threaten the innocents of her city.
All That Remains
Upon arriving home one evening, Hawke is greeted by Gamlen, who told her that Leandra failed to meet him at their usual time. Bodahn informed Hawke that Leandra had received white lillies from her suitor, and Hawke realized what had happened. An urchin questioned by Gamlen and bribed by Hawke informed her about a wounded man and Leandra, and Hawke followed the trail left.
She found the same foundry she was in years ago and, this time, discovered a passage down below. There, she found traces of a man living there and eventually confronted the mage, who had killed Leandra and the other women to recreate his dead wife. Hawke killed him, but she couldn't save her mother.
Captain's Condolences
In the wake of her mother's death, Hawke sought comfort from her companions, especially Aveline, who told her about her father to commisserate.
Following the Qun
The viscount once again called on Hawke, confiding in her that his son Saemus had decided to convert to the Qun. He asked that Hawke retrieve Saemus from the compound. Upon arriving, however, Hawke is informed by the Arishok that Saemus alread left, due to a letter from his father, asking him to meet him in the Chantry.
Hawke followed the letter, only to find Saemus already dead and a mob incited by Petrice waiting to pin the death on Hawke. Hawke killed them, confronted then by Petrice and the Grand Cleric, who proved to know what Petrice was up to and admonished her for it. Petrice is killed by a Qunari assassin, and the Grand Cleric attempts to soothe the viscount.
To Catch a Thief
With tensions mounting with the Qunari, Aveline and Isabela both approached Hawke for help. Aveline needed Hawke to approach the Arishok, Isabela needed help recovering the relic which, she suggests, might help pacify the Qunari. Hawke chose to help Isabela first.
Together, they go to Lowtown, where Isabela reveals that the relic is a sacred text of the Qunari, and also what they need to leave. Hawke, intending to reason with her later, promises to help Isabela get the relic for herself. Isabela chased after the man with the relic while Hawke dispatched Qunari and Tevinter soldiers who had come to claim the relic.
The battle done, Hawke was left to realize Isabela had fled with the relic.
Demands of the Qun
Hawke accompanied Aveline to the Qunari compound, where elven criminals had taken refuge by claiming conversation to the Qun. After hearing their side -- taking justice for their wronged sister -- Hawke agrees with the Arishok. Feeling the city can no longer be allowed to degrade, the Arishok lays seige to Kirkwall, and Hawke is forced to consider him an enemy, despite her respect for him.
Hawke battled her way through the waves of Qunari, running into first Knight-Commander Meredith and then First Enchanter Orsino. While the two bickered, Hawke demanded they stop and turn their attention to the fight, and Orsino suggested following Hawke. Reluctantly, she agreed and led the rest of the charge, straight to the viscount's keep, where hostages were being held. While Orsino provided a distraction, Hawke and her party snuck into the keep and fought their way to the throne room.
Once there, the Arishok demanded the relic of Hawke after showing he had killed the viscount. She insisted she did not have it, and Isabela reappeared, offering the relic to the Qunari. The Arishok agreed, stating he would take the relic and Isabela and go. Hawke, however, refused to allow him to have Isabela. Instead, she promised to punish the theif. The Arishok refused but, because of his respect, challenged Hawke to single combat. She triumphed and was named Champion of Kirkwall, second in importance in the city only to Knight-Commander Meredith.
[Personality]:
Marian Hawke is fiercely devoted to her ideals and the people she cherishes.
Her father brought her up believing in respect, and she tries to show it at all times. Whether she is dealing with templars or blood mages, she tries to act respectfully, acknowledging the wrongs faced and committed. She speaks to the Arishok with deference, trying to learn about his culture to understand it and seeks to do right by Qunari dead by asking Saemus, who has studied with the Qunari, what to do. Even when she disagrees, such as with blood mages, she tries to respond calmly, not by hurling influence. Her father taught her to always try and handle a situation without bloodshed or magic, not to draw unwanted attention to those abilities, and she tries to live by that creed.
Another of Hawke's values is freedom of choice. She believes that everyone should have the luxury of being able to choose how they live their lives. This leads her to an intense hatred of slavers, those who would deprive others of their liberty, and often causes her to violate her first belief, that of disliking violence. The first is a belief she holds to honor her father, the second is one intrinstic to her, so the second often receives preference when a situation pits the two against each other. She contradicts herself with blood magic, beliving no one should study it. In her mind, to follow blood magic is to be enslaved by a demon without ever knowing it, so blood magic in and of itself is a violation of freedom.
Hawke always wants to help. She usually tries to do the right thing, but she always tries to get involved. Whether she overhears a conversation about a runaway mage or reads papers and misunderstands a situation, she will get herself involved in the matters. Once involved, she tries to help the most people she can, but she will waver on that if a matter of personal freedom presents itself. Regardless of the intentions behind the request, she will never refuse to help, which means, like with Petrice's first request, Hawke is often drawn into things she doesn't fully understand and is attempted to be used to political reasons, whether they are small personal politics or sweeping ones.
Hawke's loyalty is nearly unshakeable. Once her companions join her, they become family, especially after Carver's death. She has lost most of her family, so she seeks to build a new one of her choosing. This loyalty often finds Hawke making decisions for those around her and sticking by them, regardless of the consequences. She decides Aveline deserves Donnic and goes out of her way to see it happen. Likewise, she fears Merrill's involvement with fixing the mirror and, with good intentions, blocks any progress she might make with the Dalish tool. Her companions are upon the most valuable assets Hawke considers herself to have, and their importance to her only increases after Leandra's death, as they are now what she is fighting to make Kirkwall fit for.
In personal dealings, Hawke is often prone to compliments and flattery. Because of her father's openness with her about the world, she has never considered it taboo to appreciate the beauty of men and women alike, and she considers both very appealing. She enjoys engaging in conversation and using flirtation to her advantage. At times, it is even a weapon to protect herself from someone (such as a Templar) trying to pry too much into her doings. She learned that in Ferelden, Templars typically held to their vows of chastity and grew flustered at being flirted with, so it became a way to protect herself and keep them off-balance without being disrepectful. In Kirkwall, it is something she uses for information when other, more direct methods seem not to work.
Addition:
Hawke presents herself as a calm, rational person. For the most part, she manages this. She is warm and inviting to those in need of assistance, calm and confident in her promises to help them. She tells people who need her what they need to trust her, whether that's her magical abilities or some information about the people with whom she associates. She uses this to move easily between groups, as at ease among the Dalish as she (acts like she) is among Templars. There's always an underlying nervousness, but she tries to mask that with a friendly, trustworthy front.
When she deals with Cullen, for instance, upon returning with Keran, she insists, having had Anders there to assure her she's correct, that he's been checked for demons. She doesn't expand on how she did it, only that she's sure, and she asks Cullen to trust her on the basis for that. When Magistrate Varnard asks her to recapture a man sentenced to life, she agrees for the greater good. When she meets Kelder, the man she was sent after, she learns he is the magistrate's son and that he's killed several elven children. The last of whom, Lia, was let go. Hawke makes the decision not to let Kelder live, despite the reward she was promised. If he escaped once, he could escape again, and the lives of his victims were worth more than a magistrate's favor. She gave her word to Lia's father before going into the ruins that she would kill the man, let him face that justice instead of the magister's idea of it, and she holds to that. The plea of Arianni, the mother of Feynriel, was answered with a promise to help him, and Hawke used her abilities as a mage to convince the boy's father she could be trusted. After helping Feynriel to go to the Dalish, she is quick to agree to help again when his dreams claim him, offering Arianni and Marethari her support.
With her companions, she's more honest. She's no less kind or comforting, but she reveals her own weaknesses more readily. Her uncertainty, her fears for the future, her hopes for what life mifght be. They are more than companions; they are confidants. Even Merrill, with whom she disagrees about many core issues of magic, is trusted to know that Hawke disagrees with her and why.
Hawke always tries to take the route to do the most good for the most amount of people. When she deals with people, she tries to be honest but diplomatic. She speaks respectfully nine times out of ten, regarding even those who have different opinions as valued for their input. She might disagree, but she tries to make sure that all sides are heard, even when she's already made up her mind. She gives her trust in a fair degree but is also always ready to be betrayed. Especially after Petrice, Hawke is aware that people are willing to use her to their own ends, and her refusal to let that stop her from helping is a willful defiance of bitterness rather than naivety.

Strengths
Physial
Hawke has built up some physical strength when it comes to carrying loads and doing work, as she spent a year laboring for smugglers, which included a fair amount of hauling.
Mental
Hawke is intelligent, well educated in the politics of various factions of Thedas, though her knowledge is limited to mostly human topics. She has a passing knowledge of the Dalish, mostly now from Merrill, and the Qunari, due to the influence of Fenris and the Arishok.
Emotional
Hawke makes friends for life and cuts them out only once personally betrayed. Even if she acts against them, she rarely acts against what she feels is their best interest.
Hawke is also sympathetic toward underdog situations, willing to lend a hand to help someone in dire need as opposed to someone who is merely incovenienced.
Weaknesses
Physial
Despite her magic, Hawke is only human. She is as easily injured or killed as any human and has only average strength.
Mental
While educated, Hawke is bound by the knowledge of her world. She is not a genius and is informed of politics, her world's literature, and only basic mathematics.
Emotional
Hawke is very easily drawn into the affairs of others, often without regard to the cost or whether she is wanted in the matter or not. Once she is involved, it's difficult to get her uninvolved, even if the parties don't want her there.
Hawke's concern for others often overrides her objective reasoning. She cares deeply for her friends and has a hard time seeing darker motives. Merrill is an exception because of her own prejudice against blood magic.
Hawke is a risk-seeker and enjoys tasks with a high degree of danger. She will tackle almost anything and usually enjoys things that are more difficult as opposed to things that are safer.
[Limited Powers]:
All of Hawke's spells work only within a range of, at most, twelve feet from her and have the duration/cool down period of the game.
I can further restrict them if necessary.
[Other Important Facts]:
Due to not wanting to limit and/or impose CR, Hawke's relationship with all her romanceable companions can be considered "flirty but not confirmed romances."

I'm quite used to keeping a journal. I started doing it after we lost Bethany.
[Which is still hard to write, even after four years. Still, Bethany was with the Maker, sitting beside their father and their brother, now joined by their mother, too. She was in a better place, no longer hurt and no longer hunted.
Maybe, in some way, it was for the best.]
However, I confess, even after months here, I still find it strange that others can see this. Of all the magic I know, no spell can recreate this strange behaviour. Still, I find I don't mind it.
I can find fellows here, this way. I can speak to someone when it is late and no one around me is awake. There is always someone, I find, to answer me if I speak to it.
Even now, I turn to it, beset by thoughts I cannot fully explain.
I have lost many close to me. As have so many here.
I suppose that's my point, in the end. Those who have lost and still feel it keenly, I invite you to join me next time we are at Isla Empieza.
We shall, however many are there, drink to our departed.
Until then, may the Maker keep you, the Stone protect you, the Creators guide you... or whatever faith you hold preserve you.
